JUROR STATEMENT

When I sat down to view the slides for this exhibit, I had no idea what to expect.  As it turned out, I enjoyed the wide range of the work that was submitted.  I am glad to see that the criterion for this competition has expanded to include all water media.  the resulting submissions reflect a wide variety of techniques, media and subject mater.  In building the exhibit, I attempted to reflect that variety, as well as the traditions of the Virginia Watercolor Society.  Inevitably, of course, my personal tastes entered into the process also.

I feel strongly that visual art has to be accomplished enough in technique to project a presence. It is important for artists to cooperate with their medium without being overwhelmed by it.  thecnical proficiency, while admirable, cannot be the sole -- ore even major--focus of a painting.  In making my selections, i looked for work that was personally motivated and that show idea-based accomplishments.

I appreciate having been asked to be the juror for the Virginia Watercolor Society's twenty-third exhibition, and I hope that everyone who comes to the show enjoys the 97 pieces that have been selected.
